I’ll Take The Testosterone, Hold The Toxic: How Toxic Masculinity Impacts Men’s Mental Health
Mental health struggles affect people of all genders, but men often face unique barriers to seeking help. Many societal messages discourage men from expressing vulnerability, leading to harmful patterns of silence and self-isolation. The pressure to “man up” or suppress emotions can have serious consequences, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, and even suicide. Research shows that men are less likely than women to seek professional mental health support, often due to stigma and traditional gender norms (Mahalik et al., 2003; Seidler et al., 2019).
Toxic masculinity—the rigid belief that men should be dominant, self-reliant, and emotionally stoic—can make it difficult for men to acknowledge their struggles. While resilience is a strength, suppressing emotions rather than addressing them can worsen mental health. Studies suggest that men who strongly adhere to traditional masculine norms are more likely to avoid seeking help, even when they are experiencing significant distress (Mahalik et al., 2003). This is not a personal failure but a societal issue that requires change.
Addressing these barriers starts with open conversations. When we normalize discussions about mental health and challenge outdated gender expectations, we create a culture where men feel safe to seek help. Mental wellness is not a sign of weakness; it is an essential part of overall health. If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out for support is a sign of strength—not failure. Everyone deserves access to care, free from judgment.
